The taxonomy

There is one genuine branch, and it is not a hierarchy of activities: what kind of record this is, which says only which of the other questions stop applying. Everything after it varies independently.

The activity taxonomy Four kinds of record, then five independent axes with the thirteen core activity records placed on them. A dot marks a fact the record states; where a record does not state it, nothing is drawn. Four kinds of record. Only one of them is an activity. Activity 10 Materials area 1 Service station 1 Not yet classified 1 Nature's Engineers Nature Magnifiers Wind Tunnel Moon Buggies Drawing Stars Rockets Stop Motion Animation Sensory Wall Makey Makey Sound Junk Modelling Vehicles Makey Makey Sound runs inside Sensory Wall. Junk Modelling Vehicles draws its stock from the materials area. draws on Junk Modelling No method of its own, no duration. Junk models can be taken home is recorded here, and it belongs next door. Tool area No child, so no method and no takeaway. It serves the other stations, and the induction follows the tool round the room. Quiet Creative Space The record refuses to read the name as a description. Nothing but the name is recorded, so the kind stays blank too. Five axes, independent of each other. A dot is a fact the record states. What a child does look make make, then test Takeaway keeps it left behind Adult gate open adults only induction Power none mains Prep build nothing an example a rig Sensory Wall Nature's Engineers Nature Magnifiers Wind Tunnel Tool area Junk Modelling Stop Motion Animation Makey Makey Sound Moon Buggies Junk Modelling Vehicles Drawing Stars Rockets Quiet Creative Space
A dot is a fact the record states. Where a record does not say, nothing is drawn, and the empty space is the reading. Nothing here is inferred from a neighbouring document.
Two of thirteen records say what a child leaves with, and that is the fact basis needs. Two of the three deliberately blank basis values in the corpus name this question as the reason they are blank: whether children keep the lens, and whether a balloon car goes home.

The five axes

What a child does

look · make · make, then test

The three make, then test activities are the three that were confused with each other for a fortnight. Build it, then run it. A test needs a rig and a run of floor, which is the question Junk Modelling Vehicles raises and cannot answer.

11 of 13 placed

Takeaway

keeps it · left behind

The only record stating one is Junk Modelling, which is a materials area, and the thing taken home is built at the activity next door. The kind gate is what catches that.

2 of 13 placed

Adult gate

open · adults only · induction

The strictest gate on the activity, not every tool on the table. The induction travels with the glue gun to two other stations, which is only visible if each activity records its own gate.

6 of 13 placed

Power

none · mains

Wind Tunnel has a fan and a fan repair kit, and nothing in its record or its 28 material rows mentions a socket. Junk Modelling lists a drill and glue guns and says nothing either.

7 of 13 placed

Prep build

nothing · an example · a rig

Read off the make rows rather than the prose. A rig is built once, carried, repaired and stored. All 150 recorded minutes in the corpus sit on one rig and its example board.

The seam with the event

Settled, DECISIONS.md, 18 August 2026: the activity says what it is, the event says how it is deployed. It is not restated here. The event side is a separate document, in event-taxonomy/.

The seam between the activity and the event Seven pairs. Each row shows what the activity record supplies, what the event supplies, and what the two produce together. The first two work today; the other five are proposals. The activity record says The event says Together they give the seam basis on every material row how many children, and how many groups a pick quantity, with its working mins to make one how many sessions the make list total its kind, and what a child does which station it runs on the floor plan the adult gate on its tools facilitator and volunteer per station the rota what a child leaves with whether it comes back that day the day note, and the packing list the power it needs sockets in the room where the station can stand the ages it is designed for who is actually in the room the safety decisions
The first two rows work today, and both are arithmetic. The other five are proposals. Everything else an event currently needs from an activity is read out of prose by a person.

Renders

One record read by a different public is a render. Four are named: a teacher page, an Instagram post, a printable activity card for families, and a description for children's settings. Only the teacher page has published examples, three of them, and one is Nature's Engineers, which is also a record in core-activities/. That is a direct before and after of one activity for two readers.

The teacher render, block by block Every block of the published Nature's Engineers teacher page in order, what it comes from in the activity record, and whether a script could produce it. Six blocks have nothing upstream, four are shared with the record, and two things in the record are not published at all. On the published teacher page In the activity record Could a script do it Added for the teacher. Nothing upstream to lift. The opening hook nothing rewrite Skills and competencies nothing rewrite Curriculum links, KS2 and KS3 nothing rewrite Learning questions, three nothing rewrite Learning outcomes, four nothing rewrite iOi methodology, four pedagogies nothing rewrite, but the same every time Shared with the record. What is biomimicry What it is expanded, a length pass The iOi challenge What it is one sentence, lifted Materials, optional ones marked materials.csv filter The seven techniques Method same facts, more words In the record, and not published. Safety Safety dropped, on all three pages Duration, 10 to 30 minutes front matter dropped
It is both, and the boundary is visible. Everything the teacher page adds sits above the making and has nothing upstream to lift. Everything shared with the record sits at the bottom of the page, and it is exactly the part that stops addressing the teacher and starts addressing whoever is holding the paper. The settled position holds: different words for a different reader is a rewrite. What is new is where the line falls, between the justification and the instruction.

The teacher page carries no safety

None of the three published pages has a safety section, and Junk Bots runs motors and batteries. Nor do they carry duration, group size or assessment.

A render that drops safety is a decision about the render. The record has to keep it, and it cannot be harvested back from anything published.

Key stage is published, and held nowhere

All three pages carry KS2 and KS3. No record in core-activities/ carries a key stage, an age band or anything equivalent.

The only age statement the Institute of Imagination publishes exists outside the system that is supposed to hold it. This is the case for the proposed ages field.

The order is inverted

The record runs what it is, method, safety, notes. The teacher page runs hook, curriculum, questions, outcomes, pedagogy, subject, and puts what to do last, under Workshop Essentials.

A facilitator is told what to do. A teacher is given curriculum cover first and told what to do at the end.

Proposals

All nine are proposed on 19 August 2026 and none is acted on. Each is grounded in something in the corpus. The evidence in full is in taxonomy.md §6.

P1 · Incompleteness is legal

The validator checks shape: the column set, the spelling of closed values, no merged cells. The calculator checks completeness, refuses, and names the row and file.

basis is already absent on 6 of 13 files, and two rows are blank on purpose so that they would fail. People are using an error as a comment.

P2 · Split type into kind and scale

kind is activity, materials area or service station, and it is asked of every record. scale, mini or mega make, is asked only where the kind is an activity.

type is filled on 1 of 13, and three records explain in writing that the vocabulary does not fit them.

P3 · takeaway is an arithmetic input

What a child leaves with decides the basis, so it needs a field. It is a different question from whether one of iOi's own reusable objects comes back, which is settled and belongs to the event.

Two of the three deliberately blank basis values name this question as the reason they are blank.

P4 · day_note does not belong on an activity

It is on 56 rows across two activity files, and the materials template already assigns it to the event. Where it goes instead is an event question.

Sensory Wall now carries "collect from their shed on arrival", true of one venue on one day. At the second delivery the record is wrong in a way nobody looks for.

P5 · group earns a column

Two CSVs invented it and a third render hard-codes the same information, because the file has nowhere for it. The rule to amend: a column exists if the calculator or a render reads it.

Three files solving one problem three ways, with two different grouping schemes serving two different purposes.

P6 · state on every record

One word, named, written or delivered. The project rule that a record written before its first delivery is a proposal becomes checkable rather than tonal.

Five records spend a paragraph saying where they stand, in five phrasings. The two best-filled records are the two that have been delivered.

P7 · What the venue must provide

Fill requires with power and space: none or a count of sockets; a table, a table and a run of floor, or a structure that occupies a room. It also holds a dependency on kit iOi does not own.

Power is raised in prose by four records; floor and space are raised as unanswered questions by three. Neither has a field.

P8 · Safety takes two shapes

The three lines stay as the floor. A hazard table, with hazard, who it reaches and what we do, is added where a hazard needs a mitigation.

Makey Makey Sound already writes the second shape unprompted, with four hazards. It is the one record with a genuinely dangerous element.

P9 · Material tags come from the CSV

Derive them. Keep hand-written tags for characteristics such as no power and fine motor.

About 45 of the 70 tags are item names copied from a materials file, and one has already drifted: glue gun against glue guns.

Themes and tags, drift to report

Reported under the standing job, not resolved. All open. No word was silently coined or normalised in producing this document.

What this still needs

Not part of the proposal

Questions for you

Does an activity record get a kind?

It is what tells a blank that does not apply from a blank nobody has filled in yet. Every one of the twelve calls has already been made in prose; a field only stops them being made again.

Does the validator still refuse anything at authoring time?

Your decision moves the refusal to the calculator. The question left is whether the validator keeps a floor, and if so what it is. Shape means the column set, the spelling of closed values, no merged cells and no totals row.

Is what a child leaves with a fact about the activity, or about the event?

Two blank basis values are waiting on it. If it belongs to the event, then basis becomes event-dependent, which is a larger change than it looks.

Does a render count as a reader, for the rule that decides columns?

The rule today is that a column exists if the calculator reads it. group fails it and was added twice anyway, and a third file hard-codes the same grouping into HTML.

How does a record say it is a placeholder rather than a plan?

Rockets, Quiet Creative Space and Nature Magnifiers each say so in a paragraph, in three different phrasings, and nothing can list them.

Which of the proposed fields go on the Word template before 29 August?

Two designers author by hand, and every field is a reason not to fill the template in. The Science Fair does not need most of these.

Does Safety keep one shape or two?

Makey Makey Sound already writes a hazard table because it has mains electricity at a table of under-fives. The three-line form cannot carry a mitigation.

Do the teacher-page blocks belong in the record, or only on the render?

Learning questions, learning outcomes and curriculum links exist for three published activities and for no record. Holding them in the record makes the next teacher page cheaper and makes every record longer.
